For some people, Sunday, April 12th was Easter or even the end of a long weekend, but down on Augusta street it was still the beginning of a very unusual meeting. It wasn’t some mainstream party or a crowd event, but Viva La Augusta brought downtown São Paulo some new flavor, putting Chicanos and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockabilly"target"-newRockabillies together to celebrate the only thing they have in common besides women and beer: cars. The event took place at Z Carniceria, a brand new bar located on Augusta Street, one of the most exotic streets of the city, where hustlers, strip clubs, rock clubs, movie theaters and restaurants coexist in a weird and unique balance. In that perfect setting Viva La Augusta made the end of the holiday less painful.
Like a Cramps song, the parking lot of a supermarket was full of bad music, bad girls and noisy machines. “I know both cultures are different and don’t get along, but I have good friends in both and they agreed to celebrate the passion for classic cars”, says Tibira, the man behind the party and one of the main names of the rock scene in São Paulo. Besides Z Carniceria – good beer and good food served inside a cool and restored butcher shop from the 50’s (pure vegan’s nightmare) – Tibira owns Vegas, the first big club that upgraded Augusta street in her new status from a decadent street to something hyped and marketable. After Vegas, a lot of new places came. It is impossible to be in Sao Paulo and not go there for a walk and get caught in some unexpected experience. It is a must and it is a zoo. Tibira is a collector himself and now, since his son is grown up, he can spend more money on cars. He owns a Galaxie, just like his dad did,
and someday he'll buy a Cadillac. “My inspiration was the Viva Las Vegas festival, but there’s nothing like what we are doing here. In theory, those who listen to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychobilly"target"-newPsychobilly would never enjoy local rap”, Says Tibira, who was tired of car markets full of old boring men, “New people show up, like vintage bike collectors and it is all about fun”.
The audience was mixed as well, from exhibitor’s kids to curious people who were just walking by, experiencing a little bit of what can be seen in movies like “Cry Baby” and “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” to name a few. Cold beer and shots of Jagermaster were free, and nobody seemed to care how loud the motors were, like a status sign: the louder, the better. One of the classics was the amazing black Buick, the first car used by Batman, and an orange Rat Rod brought by a funny tall hillbilly. Close to the end of the party, with his red cheeks lit up, was dancing with his knees on the floor.
