The NMVA 2009 was held at the expo center of the Eko hotles and suites in Victoria Island, Lagos and the theme for this year's edition which is music edifies..play responsibly. This theme was chosen because Nigerians are convinced that obscene and corrupt themes don't guarantee high record sales. Definitely the odds Nigerians are experiencing today, the aim of this year is to also celebrate excellence and invariably discourage mediocrity. One objective of the NMVA is to emphasize the need to be conscious of messages portrayed in our songs and change the general perception and orientation that;vulgarity sells and to dissuade artists from indulging in vulgarity. It is a universally proven fact that the impact of music to a person cannot be over emphasized. Music commands an overwhelming interest. By music, people can be influenced postively or negatively.

The event kicked off with the singing of the national anthem and an anthem for the NMVA. After this the event proper kicked off, awards were given out to several artistes and video directors who were exemplary in the works with Darey emerging as the biggest winner on the night with three (Annabels) awards. The Annabel is a symbol of the outstanding qualities perfection.A feminine figure for the NMVA statuette stems from the natural attributes and is carved out of solid metal and its golden colour, an epitome of preciousness.

The event which had Nigezie's Kwame as one of the comperes was well attended by big names on the Nigerian entertainment scenes with names like Darey, Sound Sultan, Mr. Kool, Lanre Bakare, G Exploits, DJ Tee, Wande Coal, Dr. SID, Sauce Kid, Black Solo, Anogiri, Jesse & Ice Prince, Freewindz, Charlie Boy, Zakky Adzee, Waje, Magnito, Omawumi, Spy-da-man, K-Solo, JayWon, Beanpole, Ghana's Samini and so many
more gracing the green carpet and other names like MI, Bracket, Illbliss, Clarence Peters, Suspect and many others.. coming in later in the course of the event.

Chief Dr.Raymond Dokpesi the pioneer of the first satelite TV and also the first privately owned radio station RaypowerFM' was inducted into the NMVA 2009 hall of fame for his overwhelming contribution to the promotion of Nigerian made music videos based programmes on his media.

This year's edition of the awards is definitely a big improvement from last year's, with no visible corporate sponsorship except for support from Lagos and Benue state governments and some other organizations. The Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA) organized by Cally Ikpe Callivision Network.
