One of the best times we had covering the Pachanga Latino Music Festival was having the opportunity to catch up with Camilo Lara, of the Mexican Institute of Sound. Lara is the main brain behind all the crazy sampling and mixed-genre play on all the M.I.S. albums, so we thought it'd be fun to take him record shopping to a local hole-in-the-wall for some vinyl—at Austin's own Friends of Sound—and Lara fell in love with a load of random finds.

The good man and his joining group played an amazing headline show later on that night, and the performance blew us all away. We just couldn't get over the fact that it was really him, especially after seeing him talk like this about his music earlier in the day, all composed and very humble about his words.

He spoke to us about his most recent release Soy Sauce and the concept behind his mix-genre creations, and of course talked about all the native influences that have helped him realize his own sound. At the end of the night, Lara reappeared in character—a true performer on stage. M.I.S. is constantly traveling the globe, so be sure to see them if you see the Mexican Institute of Sound on a calendar near you...
